We would have been better off if he had stuck with soap operas.
I do have to give him an "E" for effort during the 80s. At least he had guitars in his band, and put up a token fight against the onslaught of Flock of Seagulls and the like. But songs like this still make my skin crawl.

Earworm April 28, 2009 - Man In The Box/Alice In Chains
They helped Nirvana save rock 'n' roll
Allmusic.com describes Alice In Chains very tidily:
"Drawing equally from the heavy riffing of post-Van Halen metal and the gloomy strains of post-punk, the band developed a bleak, nihilistic sound that balanced grinding hard rock with subtly textured acoustic numbers. They were hard enough for metal fans, yet their dark subject matter and punky attack placed them among the front ranks of the Seattle-based grunge bands."
What more can you ask from a band than that?

Earworm April 27, 2009 - Any Way You Want It/Journey
I can't bear Steve Perry
...and when you look back over the band's long history, it's surprising how many years the band worked without Perry. He kept quitting and then coming back a few years later.
But it seems all of their major hits feature his screeching, desperate, whining "voice", if you want to call it that. You know the way Mary Hart's voice affected Kramer on Seinfeld? Sent him into a seizure? I don't suffer seizures when I hear Perry sing, but I crave oblivion.
I despised the band and all their music for years. Then I saw some local band in a Corpus Christi bar a few years back. Four pieces, the lead singer a bored looking girl in a housedress, barefoot and smoking a cigarette as she sang. They did "Don't Stop Believin'" and I realized for the first time that it was a terrific song. She just owned it.
I started listening to Journey with a new perspective. I still hate all their recordings, but they do have a lot of fine songs. And I realize the only I can't stand them is because of that wretched voice of Perry's. I was so pleased the most recent time he quit when the band replaced him with a Filipino guy they found on YouTube.
Steve: nobody is indispensable.

Witty, fun, terrific beat and melody. And the lyrics are real rock 'n' roll.

Earworm April 24, 2009 - I Won't Back Down/Tom Petty
He's homely and not the greatest singer but man, can he write songs.
Like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Petty's music gets better with every passing year. This one is from1989's Full Moon Fever, about the midpoint of his terrific career.
Just look at the lyrics, which speak for themselves and for rock 'n' roll in general.
I Won't Back Down
Well I wont back down, no I wont back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I wont back down
Gonna stand my ground, wont be turned around
And Ill keep this world from draggin' me down
Gonna stand my ground and I wont back down
Hey baby there ain't no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
And I wont back down.
Well I know what's right, I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin me around
But Ill stand my ground and I wont back down
Hey baby, there aint no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
And I wont back down
No, I wont back down

Earworm April 23, 2009 - Naughty Lady of Shady Lane/Ames Brothers
The Ames Brothers - killed by rock 'n' roll
These four brothers were pretty close to an overnight sensation in the early 50s, one of the decade's several big close-harmony groups. They went from local talent shows to big nightclub acts to Hollywood in a few years, and peaked in 1954 with The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane, a bossa nova novelty song about a precocious five-year-old girl.
By the time I was old enough to buy records, the Ames Brothers had disappeared in Elvis' dust.
The youngest Ames brother, Ed, played Daniel Boone's sidekick Mingo during the 60s TV series.
MERIT: ** 1/2
ORIGIN: When I was about nine, my parents bought an RCA compilation double-album when they got the family's first Hi-Fi. It was called 60 Years of Music America Loves Best, and it included RCA-recorded hits going back as far as Enrico Caruso. There was Paul Whiteman, Harry Belafonte, Sinatra, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and many others doing hits like And the Angels Sing, Blue Danube Waltz, Prisoner of Love and a smattering of classical favorites. I must have played it end to end thousands of times, memorizing every note and nuance.
More than anything else except the old folk songs my family sang, this double album shaped my appreciation for popular music, and I couldn't ask for a better foundation.
The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane was one of the later entries on the album.
This spring I found a copy of the album online for 12 bucks, and snagged it. I no longer have a working turntable, so I brought it in one day for my friend Walt to take home and transfer to CD for me.
While describing the album and its songs to Walt, the Ames Brothers' hit came to mind, and the hook was set.

Earworm April 23, 2009 - Cocaine/J.J. Cale
Better than Clapton's version
J.J. Cale grew up in Tulsa and worked with Leon Russell, Delaney & Bonnie before he met became friends with Eric Clapton. Cale's Troubadour album in 1976 included Cocaine. It got him a lot of airplay on progressive rock stations. But when Clapton covered the song the next year, it took off, and achieved anthem status in no time.
Cale's original version was crisper, cleaner, more precise than Clapton's, just a better piece of music.
Cale's biggest success was After Midnight, which he wrote in 1965. Clapton had a nice run with that one, too.

Earworm April 22, 2009 - Love Is Blue/Paul Mauriat Orchestra
Even in 1968, many of the biggest hits were pure cotton candy.
Paul Mauriat was a classically trained musician born in the mid 1920s. Around the 50s he started producing commercial music, and had a number of European hits. By far his biggest was the harpsichord-driven Love Is Blue in 1968, a worldwide hit. I did own the 45 RPM single.
While Mauriat was pretty much a one-hit wonder in the U.S., he was huge in the far east, playing his last concert in Japan in 1998.
What was it like to be Paul Mauriat, I wonder?
Speaking of the fluffy nature of hit songs even during the pitch of the tumultuous 60s, these were the top 10 songs the year Love Is Blue was released:
1. Hey June, The Beatles
2. Honey, Bobby Goldsboro
3. Love Is Blue, Paul Mauriat
4. (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay, Otis Redding
5. People Got to Be Free, Rascals
6. Sunshine of Your Love, Cream
7. This Guy’s In Love With You, Herb Alpert
8. Stoned Soul Picnic, Fifth Dimension
9. Mrs. Robinson, Simon and Garfunkel
10. Tighten Up, Archie Bell and The Drells

I had to look it up. I had no idea who did this song, though I've heard it at least 100,000 times. The kind of song that made K-Tel possible.

Earworm April 22, 2009 - Moonlight Becomes You/Bing Crosby
Some part of my mind was clearly hung on nostalgia this day.
Bing Crosby sang this to Dorothy Lamour in 1942's Road To Morocco.
Morocco was the third, most successful and screwiest of the series he did with Bob Hope and Lamour. It was the kind of absurdist comedy that appealed strongly to me even in when I was a boy, and it helped clear the way for Monty Python and the frequently hilarious "bad joke" movies that started with Airplane.
Hope got the punch lines, Crosby got the girl and sang at least one romantic ballad in each film.
I liked this melody the first time I heard it as a child, but why it buried intself in my mind this morning is a mystery.
