Earworm April 23, 2009 - Cocaine/J.J. Cale

Better than Clapton's version

J.J. Cale grew up in Tulsa and worked with Leon Russell, Delaney & Bonnie before he met became friends with Eric Clapton. Cale's Troubadour album in 1976 included Cocaine. It got him a lot of airplay on progressive rock stations. But when Clapton covered the song the next year, it took off, and achieved anthem status in no time.

Cale's original version was crisper, cleaner, more precise than Clapton's, just a better piece of music.

Cale's biggest success was After Midnight, which he wrote in 1965. Clapton had a nice run with that one, too.

MERIT: *** 1/2
